Sony, one of the photography industry’s leaders, is at it again. In what we believe to be an effort to bolster it’s community strength and presence in the United Kingdom, they have announced today that they will host a competition which will determine the “best photographer” in the UK. Over the last year, Sony has increased their engagement efforts, adding contests where they can, including one on creativeLIVE during their 3-day Shoot What You Love event last April.

The winner of the UK contest won’t just take home an award, but an entire Sony kit. He or she will also be featured in the upcoming 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition in London in May. All of the details are below in Sony’s official press release.

Sony World Photography Awards launch hunt to uncover UK’s best photographer

The Sony World Photography Awards, one of the world’s most prestigious photography competitions, together with Sony UK, today launches a new competition to discover the UK’s best photographer.

The UK National Award is new for the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards and is open to photographers of all abilities from across the UK. Entries are free via www.worldphoto.org and photographers can enter one of ten categories. The judges, including Nigel Atherton, Group Editor, IPC Photo (Amateur Photographer/ What Digital Camera) and Astrid Merget, Creative Director of the World Photography Organisation, will uncover and honour the best single image by a UK national from across these categories.

This special award offers an amazing opportunity for budding photographers to have their work seen globally and be recognised alongside the world’s leading photographers.

The winner of the UK National Award will be announced on 18 March 2014. The winning photographer will receive Sony camera equipment. Alongside two runners-up, the winning photographer will have their work displayed alongside professional photographers from around the globe as part of the 2014 Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition held in London from 1-18 May 2014 and showcased online at www.worldphoto.org

Each year the Sony World Photography Awards celebrates the very best international contemporary photography. The awards include: 15 Professional categories for serious photographers; 10 Open categories for enthusiasts; the Student Focus competition for higher education photography students aged 18-28 and a Youth Competition for photographers under 20.

The winner of the UK National Award will be chosen from entries to the Open competition of the 2014 Sony Word Photography Awards taken by UK nationals.

The Open competition includes ten categories which are:

● Architecture

● Arts & Culture

● Enhanced

● Low-light

● Nature & Wildlife

● Panoramic

● People

● Smile

● Split second

● Travel

The competition will close on 6 January 2014. Entries will be firstly judged by WPO’s pre-selection committee and a winner will be decided by the special judging panel.

Scott Gray, Managing Director of the World Photography Organisation comments “The Sony World Photography Awards are committed to engaging with and supporting talented photographers from around the globe. It is for this reason that we are thrilled to be able to work closely with Sony’s UK office to identify the local photographers that are producing great work and pushing their own creative boundaries, so that we can raise their profile across the globe and provide inspiration to other budding British photographers.”
