One thing I pretty much never get sick of is being stoked for my fellow ’90s hardcore veterans who are doing cool stuff. I am always super proud to see the people I knew from shows 20 years ago using the foundation of DIY hardcore to start companies, new bands, and generally take over the world one small step at a time. One of those people is Mike Schleibaum of Darkest Hour, who is not only a driving force behind that band but also a producer who has worked with the likes of Dead To Fall, Strike Anywhere and From Autumn To Ashes as well as composing music for a bunch of TV shows on Nat Geo, Discovery, and more.

Much like The Black Dahlia Murder, BTBAM, and Dillinger Escape Plan, Darkest Hour is one of those bands that kind of gets put under the heading of “metal” even though their roots are in 90s hardcore. Case in point, I remember Mike as “Mike from Battery,” his old band that played YOT/Judge-style hardcore back in the day when it was very uncool to play traditional hardcore. We caught up and talked about Battery, how he got into the producer game, and what it’s like to be a weird “inside kid.”
