Thirteen years ago Blair Stocker moved into house that was outfitted with a photographer’s dark room. The trouble? Blair isn’t a photographer. She’s a quilter.
In the intervening years Blair transformed the dark, cavernous space into a light-filled quilting studio any crafter would envy.
How’d she get so lucky? She explains it like this, “I’m convinced that the key to having your own creative space at home is to make a lot of messes upstairs in the main living area because sooner or later they give up and give you a big room down in the basement that you can decorate all on your own with all your favorite things.”
And decorate it with all of her favorite things is what she has done.
Blair is dedicated to upcycling and breathing new life into old objects. In fact, she’s such a pro at scouting out steals, she taught a CreativeLive class dedicated to thrift store shopping tips.
“I like having these little bits to look at.”
“This is my favorite thing ever. It was a gift from my mother-in-law when my book was published and it’s a little ivory Victorian pin cushion and tape measure.”
But form doesn’t come without function.
“As a quilt maker its really important to be able to see things from far away to get a sense of the design. This design wall is made with flannel fabric so when you cut your pieces you can actually go and place them on it and it will stick.”
“I have actually culled down my fabric to just what you see right here. I used to have 3 of these, but I had to make hard decisions.”
