The Nikon D4S is finally here, and of course, Chase Jarvis has first dibs on giving it a spin. Provided generously by our friends at DPReview, Chase got his hands on the D4S for this unboxing video.

Chase has a lot of feedback about this camera, which you can see in the video and read on his blog, but the important notes include:

  • A prettier preview: Nikon has added the ability to adjust the colors in the LCD, which, as Chase puts it, is “nerdy but nice.”
  • Improved autofocus: Group Autofocus allows for multiple points of focus, and Nikon says they’d adjusted their AF algorithm to accommodate the D4s’s new extra frame per second.
  • That new sensor: “Nikon has redesigned the 16MP full-frame CMOS sensor and it’s now capable of — hang on to your pants, folks — a whopping ISO 409,600 in Hi4 mode,” writes Chase, making it possible to shoot is super low-light settings.

Chase’s take-home?

“It’s a solid update,” he writes, noting that the Nikon D4S’s “insanely high ISO” and internal updates will please videographers, photojournalists, and basically gearheads of all sorts.
