5 Fun Outings for Creative Parents

When was the last time you left the house? Going to the grocery store doesn’t count. If you have children, chances are you race through the day, then fall in bed at night wondering where the day went. But when you stop and think about it, you probably spend every day seeing the same sights. You can’t remember the last time you did something that inspired you to create.

But feeding your creative spirit benefits both you and your children, since you’ll be a better parent when you feel personally fulfilled. If you can find an activity you can enjoy together, that benefit will be even greater. Here are a few outings you can enjoy along with your children.

Arts and Crafts
Of course, the best place to indulge your creative side is at an art gallery or museum, but this isn’t always the best option for fussy, easily-bored children. Instead, search for venues where you can all actively participate in the creation process. Spend the afternoon making vases or creating tie-dye T-shirts at a local youth center. You’ll likely find you don’t have to look far to find opportunities to create artwork, especially on weekends.

Local Library
In an effort to improve the community, many public libraries now have a full calendar of activities geared toward children. Parents can enjoy these events alongside their children or grab a book and read while their kids are having fun. Either way, you’ll all have a great afternoon out of the house and you’ll leave feeling creatively reenergized. While you’re there, start a challenge where you each pick out a book and commit to reading it by the time the due date rolls around. There’s no limit to the adventures you can experience between the covers of a book.

Science Museum
If you think a science museum can’t be inspiring, it may be a while since you’ve been. As your children rush from exhibit to exhibit, observe the museum’s inherent challenge to look at the world a little more closely. Many science museums have special exhibits where you can go more in-depth into a topic. You’ll learn together as a family and likely walk away with great ideas for your next project.

Water Sources
Scenery is always inspiring, but how do you keep the kids busy while you enjoy a moment of serenity? It might not be the quietest option, but if you have a water source nearby, you could discover that a day outdoors is one of the best things you can do. Whether it’s a picnic by the lake, a day at the beach, or just a lazy afternoon at the swimming pool, you’ll likely find just being near the water is calming, allowing the ideas to naturally flow.

Aquariums and Zoos
Children can’t ever seem to get enough of animals, making zoos a favorite among children of all ages. Today’s zoos are often set up like nature preserves, giving parents a peaceful nature-based outing. If it’s too hot outside to enjoy your local zoo, consider a nearby aquarium instead. You’ll discover that there’s a reason people have aquariums in their homes. There’s something about watching fish swim that relieves stress, allowing you to connect with your creative side.

Parents are often challenged to find fun things for their children to do. But it’s also important to find activities they can enjoy, as well. With the right choice of activities, parents can not only enjoy the activities alongside their children, but they can be creatively inspired, as well.
